Getting Started
How do I activate Reader Mode?
There are three ways to activate Focus Reader:
- Click the Focus Reader icon in your browser toolbar
- Click the "Activate Reader Mode" button in the popup
- The extension will automatically detect article pages
Which websites are supported?
Focus Reader works on most article-based websites, including:
- •News sites: TechCrunch, Ars Technica, The Verge, etc.
- •Blogging platforms: Medium, Dev.to, Substack, WordPress
- •Documentation: Technical docs, wikis, guides
- •Any article: Most web pages with readable content
How do I customize the reading experience?
Click the Focus Reader icon to access settings:
- •Theme: Toggle between light and dark mode
- •Font: Choose between Serif, Sans-Serif, and Monospace
- •Font Size: Adjust from Small to Extra Large

How does the Reading List work?
The Reading List allows you to save articles for later:
- 1.Open any article and activate Focus Reader
- 2.Click "Add to Reading List" in the popup
- 3.Access your saved articles anytime from the Reading List tab
- 4.Your reading progress is automatically saved
What is reading progress tracking?
Focus Reader automatically tracks how far you've read in each article. A progress indicator shows at the top of the page, and your position is saved when you close the tab. When you return, you'll be taken back to where you left off.
How do I exit Reader Mode?
To return to the original page:
- •Click the "Exit Reader Mode" button at the top of the page
- •Press the ESC key
- •Reload the page
Troubleshooting
Reader Mode doesn't work on a certain page
Some pages may not be compatible with Reader Mode:
- •Pages with heavy JavaScript content may not parse correctly
- •Paywalled content may be blocked by the website
- •Some sites actively block reader mode extensions
If you encounter a page that should work but doesn't, please send us feedback with the URL.
My settings aren't saving
Try these steps:
- Make sure you're not in Incognito/Private mode (unless you've enabled the extension there)
- Check that the extension has storage permissions (should be automatic)
- Try disabling and re-enabling the extension
- If the problem persists, please contact support
The extension icon doesn't appear
To pin the extension to your toolbar:
- Click the puzzle piece icon in your Chrome toolbar
- Find "Focus Reader" in the list
- Click the pin icon next to it
- The Focus Reader icon will now appear in your toolbar
Privacy & Permissions
What permissions does Focus Reader need?
Focus Reader requires minimal permissions:
- •Active Tab: To read and clean up the current page's content
- •Storage: To save your settings and reading list locally

Does Focus Reader collect my data?
No. Focus Reader is privacy-first. All your data (settings, reading list, preferences) is stored locally on your device. We do not track your browsing history, collect personal information, or send data to external servers. The extension works entirely offline.
